Windows 7 host network slow after VMware, Oracle/Java VirtualBox installation

If you are on Windows 7 and experiencing degraded performance with HOST network (browsing other computers in the physical network has become dramatically slow, transfering files from or to other computers have become painfully slow and the transfer rate is just KBs while your connection is 100/1000MBPS) then be assured, the virtual adaptors installed by these virtual boxes are playing off.

Detailed explanation from VMWare KB article could be found here (This KB article is pretty old, however the issues handled are same till date, so don’t get confused)

To get over with this issue, you may go ahead and disable the virtual network adaptors installed by VMWare or Oracle/Java VirtualBox application(s).

Edit the virtual appliance network property and selected “Bridged” and optionally “Replicate physical network state” (check image)

36 Important/Recommended Windows 7 updates after removing SP1 beta, Internet Explorer 9 beta

Holy cow!!! Indeed it was a damn experience! A total of 126MB downloads and hours long installation of 36 important/recommended updates for security, Internet Explorer and .Net 4 for my Windows 7 64bit Professional Edition.
Don’t be alarmed if you face the same situation, the screen may halt stating preparing windows at stage 2 of 2 and after hours you will still find the system preparing itself…
Just turn off the machine, restart it and select “Start normally”, Unless you are a cursed person, Windows 7 should start up without any kind of hiccups and function normally.
The number of updates may vary depending upon the components you already installed with your system. However, I am left with a WTF expression.

Windows 7 “Additional log on information may be required”

Ok! We are losing the count with addressing this peculiar issue. After almost a month without seeing this “stupid” notification, we faced this dreaded notification popup from day before!

All the previous tried workarounds turned futile and we figured out, until the ISA client not installed, Windows 7 doesn’t popup this message. Please be reminded, we are dealing with a domain network issue and the solution is exclusively for following scenario:

  • Windows 2008/Windows 2003 Domain Network
  • ISA 2006
  • Clients running either Windows XP Pro or Windows 7 64/32bit professional clients
  • ISA Webproxy, ISA Secure_NAT clients

The latest fix worked out was, changing the default gateway of client computer with ISA 2006 Server’s interal IP address (AKKA secure_nat client). The moment the default gateway address was changed the dreaded notification stopped poping up!

We hope, we wouldnt see the same notification for a while now, leaving a big question “Should one use both firewall client and Secure_NAT at the same time”. Earlier we were told that one shouldn’t!

It all started when we came across nasty issues with the networking part of Windows 7. We had struggled days and weeks to get our systems recognize and fine sync with our existing network (Windows 2008, Windows 2003 domain with spanned active directory, ISA 2006, Configuration Manager 2007 or AKKA SMS server, Watchguard UTM etc). There are plenty of other sites which train the users how to use Windows 7 effectively and we believe those guys have better knowledge to share. Hence we had limited “how to” knowledge sharing with this blog and were trying our level best to highlight the annoyance this new generation operating system has caused us.

Today once after the first post was made almost 2.5 months back, we received 3000 hits and from the humble prospects we had while starting this blog page, we think it is a great achievement. The maximum traffic we received were against the posts for Oracle on Windows topics and we think in future also we would receive the maximum visitors looking information regarding Oracle.

Please keep on visiting us and post your suggestions and questions so that we would able to develop this blog into a further information sharing hub for Windows 7 oriented topics.

Windows 7, Avast vs AVG & Avira Antivir

Which free edition you would prefer? Avast, AVG and Avira all offer free editions of their respective products free of cost for home users (breaching the agreement many use those products at corporate environments as well). We have fully licensed Symantec Endpoint Protection Suit and while we started lab testing Windows 7, the package was not compatible with Windows 7. We needed to have moderate level of protections for our Windows 7 boxes and tried out all the above mentioned Antivirus products.

From the experiences till date from last four months, Avast is the winner! Starting with a clean interface and user-friendly GUI and updates are just in KBS this stood apart from AVG and Avira. AVG installation was always testing our patience when Avira has a poor appearance and heavy on the system (AVG also slows down the booting part). Though the writer finally choses Avira Antivir against other two products, we prefer the latest version of Avast against both AVG and Avira.

Hope this information is useful for people who wonder which free antivirus product they should go for. We, Windows7bugs team would ask the users to avoid visiting sites which malicious in nature (Software cracks, teaching hacking etc) and to avoid those small applications which are written for cracking BIGGER software. The less risks you take consciously make these free products provide you better protection.

Windows 7, No desktop Internet Explorer special icon

I never used Windows Vista (other than dealing with couple of boxes when personal contacts got it pre-installed with their laptop/notebooks and needed some assistance to configure them) and after using Windows XP for almost 10 years, expected Windows 7 also to have the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. If you “still” remember, this IE icon on the desktop was truly special, as a right-click ->properties allowed the user to straightaway interact with the IE settings. With Windows 7 Internet Explorer icon is not a default desktop icon. Instead a user must create a shortcut if he/she wants an easy access to IE! Read the explanation for this from Microsoft here

Disable ‘Admin share’ on Windows OS

Be careful prior you disable the Admin Shares from your box. Microsoft strongly object about turning off the admin shares. Software like “Oracle” require Admin Shares to be enabled in order to install most of their software on Windows.

Regardless, I feel it is necessary at many times as I keep some “personal” stuff with my work boxes. There exist a small registry hack actually demonstrating how to disable admin shares with Windows XP, and the same hack works perfectly with later Windows OS as well.

Here is the hack (obtained from petri site)

Start regedit and browse to:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanManServer\Parameters
Name: AutoShareWks
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value: 0

A double idiot proof note:
location (i.e. it does not exist) – please right click in the right pane of the window and
create it, If you can’t find the value in the registry under the exact.

You must restart your box in order to get this hack activated.

Windows 7, Oracle developer 10g Crash, Work around

So you finally installed Oracle 10g developer suite on your Windows 7 box? Well if you already did then might have exeperienced the same crashing also!
Here is a simple work around to stop the program being crashed frequently. Before you open existing forms, make sure you are connected to the database instance. This reduces the frequency of crashing for Oracle 10g developer suite.
